Millets are healthy whole grains that are gluten-free, loaded with protein, fiber, and antioxidants. They belong to the Poaceae family, commonly known as the grass family. The food grain has been a part of the Indian diet since ancient times, but now it has gained popularity even in western countries, owing to its amazing health benefits. Here are five types of millets that you can include in your diet when trying to shed kilos.
02 Ragi or Finger Millet
Ragi is exceptionally rich in iron, a trace mineral required by our body to produce haemoglobin in the red blood cells. It also contains the highest amount of calcium and potassium. Being rich in fiber content, ragi takes time to get digested in the stomach as a result you keep fuller for a longer time. Studies suggest that ragi is also beneficial for people suffering from diabetes as it does not spike the blood sugar level. Due to high amino acids content, this food grain could also be given to kids for brain development.
03 Jowar or Sorghum
Sorghum is loaded with a variety of nutrients including Vitamin B, magnesium, and antioxidants -flavonoids, phenolic acids, and tannins. The B vitamins play a crucial role in boosting the metabolism and improving the quality of hair and skin, while magnesium promotes bone and heart health. Furthermore, 96 grams of sorghum provides approximately 20 per cent of the recommended daily fiber intake. Fiber promotes gut health, regularise your blood sugar levels, and aids weight management.
04 Bajra or pearl millet
Bajra or pearl milletis loaded with a variety of nutrients including protein, fibre, magnesium, iron, and calcium. This food is exceptionally low in calories and one of the best choices of grain, when you aim, is to shed kilos. The fiber content in it keeps you fuller for a longer time without increasing your daily calories count. Daily consumption of bajra can also cut down the risk of Type 2 Diabetes, several types of cancer, control cholesterol, and prevent asthma.
